Health Coverage for Retirees
Obtaining suitable health insurance is often a significant difficulty for retired senior citizens. Many retirees have been receiving benefits through their jobs rather than from private coverage, and those benefits may well be lessened or lost entirely upon retirement. Furthermore, health problems become increasingly likely and increasingly severe with age, making it a genuinely important and urgent matter for retired seniors to be certain they have good reliable health insurance with sufficient coverage for whatever needs might arise.
Throughout much of life, for those without chronic ailments or disabilities, health insurance is more of a gamble than a necessity; it is simply a way to feel secure and to know that, if anything urgent should arise, the insured will not be unexpectedly bankrupted by medical costs. As you grow older, though, the risk of health problems steadily increases with age until it is a virtual certainty. Heart problems, cholesterol, loss of bone density - all these problems become of greater concern as you grow older, and it is likely to be only a matter of time until some health crisis occurs that may be difficult or impossible to pay for out-of-pocket on savings and a pension plan alone.
Fortunately, there are health insurance companies tailored specifically to the needs of retirees. There are also government programs that provide health benefits to retired seniors; the most prominent of these is Medicare, which very often can provide total coverage for many necessary medical expenses, and applies automatically to all US citizens over the age of 65 - or with certain other disabilities - who lack other forms of health insurance coverage.
